    Michael Beutler

Michael Beutler was born in Oldenburg, Germany, in 1976. He studied at the Städelschule Frankfurt (1997-2003) and Glasgow School of Art (2000-2001).

Among his most recent solo-shows: in 2010 at the Galerie Bärbel Grässlin of Frankfurt, in 2009 7×14 at the Staatliche Kunsthalle di Baden-Baden and Fortino #1, Brodbeck Foundation for Contemporary Art, Catania; in 2008 at the Bonniers Konsthall of Stockholm, and in 2005 at the Museumsstraße Sprengel Museum, Hannover. He has exhibited in Naples at PAN (2008), Portikus, Frankfurt, Museum Folkwang in Essen, Witte de With in Rotterdam. He has participated in many Art Biennials, such as Venice (2010), Berlin and Moscow (2005) and Gwanju (2006); in 2011 he was at the Singapore Biennale Open House and in Material World, Mass MOCA, Massachusetts, USA.

For Beutler, the given exhibition space is always the departure point for the elaboration of his artistic project. The artist analyses forms, functions and materials that make up the show space to then create architectural details, which transform the viewer into player in a process of reconversion. In this very process of transforming a place, the artist at times also uses “machines” (which he makes himself) with the twofold function of artwork and tool for making art works.
