Monolith

The Monolith is a sculpture that employs a singular gesture in a material mass. The singularity of the gesture unveils, or betrays, the material and transforms the mass of stuff into a form of being.

I understand a singular gesture as simple, and sharp as a fold in paper , a specific fold, betraying the matter, size, and presence of a piece of paper and unveling it as a paper piece.

The Monolith is produced by pressing a hot metal surface into a foam block.

The surface rendered is of that of compressed foam ; a surface native to the material volume, however alien to its known appearance.

Shiny, black, tall, mirror.
